Advanced DHTML Popup Articles |
DHTML, AJAX & JavaScript in Web Design |
A series of articles is being written on various aspects of DHTML and JavaScript in web design.
These will be wide ranging in the level of technical content present, and will include examples and actual
demo's of Advanced DHTML Popup. Initially the role of DHTML in content management will be studied, with a look at both simple
JavaScript methods applied to an image gallery example, and AJAX methods by comparison.
The needs of web design go far beyond image manipulation however, and more sophisticated uses of floating DHTML layers
in the page include the selective updating of content for in the layer for various purposes. In this case the use of AJAX
becomes very important.

1. DHTML Overview
One of the several kinds of DHTML Popups are Hover ads, and we will take a look here at what hover ads are
and what else may be done with "floating layers" or DHTML popups in a web-page, and how they can far exceed
the idea of advertising.

DHTML, AJAX, PHP & MySQL in Content Management:
2. Simple DHTML Image Gallery
In this article we take a look at a simple way to show enlarged images from a gallery of thumbnails laid out in a table. When the mouse passes over the thumbnails, a magnified version shows up in the DHTML popup window below.

3. Simple AJAX example - form validation
Before seeing how AJAX may help with image (or other) content management, first we take a look at its fundamental
ability in this article. The simplest possible implementation is used to validate (simplistically for the sake of the example)
an email sign-up form. By doing this we combine the security of server-side processing with the advantages of same-page error
notification common to standard client-side JavaScript form validation techniques. Added to this is the unique advantage of
AJAX that allows immediate updating of just a part of the content without having to reload the page.

4. Simple PHP/MySQL example - image thumbnails
A simple demonstration of the combined use of DHTML Popups with PHP and MySQL is shown.
We will see that by using simple functions available with Advanced DHTML Popup the content, size and position
can all be dynamically updated. In the present case the content and position are generated on the server by
means of an image id and size attribute.
