Advanced DHTML Popup Pro Version 2.51 is released to the subsciber group today and will be live in a few days. The Transparent Flash Player Version 3.1 is now live and available for download from the users area. A new plugin for ADP has been developed and has also been released on offer to the subscriber group - footer ads! All plugins have been converted to setup exe's to automate the installation.

In this months issue we cover:

Advanced DHTML Popup Pro 2.51 - live

Several key internal changes have been made to accomodate the new plugin installers and the new footer plugin. The modal mask plugin is now redundant and this functionality is included in the GUI of Advanced DHTML Popup Pro.

Plugins converted to setup exe's - you must upgrade

To automate the installation process and avoid confusion over exactly where to unpack the plugin packages to we have re-released all plugins as setup exe's. You will be able to find these in the user area on entering the code provided in the newsletter (you must upgrade to ADP 2.51 first using the link provided). When ADP 2.51 is live this will not be necessary.

The Transparent Player Version 3.1 - live

Continuing the extension of an already remarkably powerful script we have released the latest revision which includes 2 new templates for custom content and YouTube content.

New ADP plugin - footer ads!

At last we have version 1.0 ready (released early to the subscriber group on offer and soon to be generally released). See here for the details and screenshots.

October 2009

October 07, 2009

Advanced DHTML Popup Pro Version 2.50 is released today with the first step taken towards a complete GUI driven multiple layers output. The Transparent Flash Player Version 3.0 is now live and available for download from the users area. See the June entry for the powerful new features of the player. A new plugin for ADP has been developed and will be released in a few days - footer ads!

In this months issue we cover:

Advanced DHTML Popup Pro 2.50 - live

Today we are happy to release a version of ADP Pro which at last begins to cover the multiple layers aspect from within the application, instead of users having to manually edit and configure the generated files themselves.

Its only the first step, but its a powerful one because now the contents for different layers can be created all within the same project using a new form. The next revision will bring in the API functions to the application interface so that the necessary API calls to swap contents, change sizes, locations of multiple layers on one page can all be done before compilation. Powerful!

In addition (and see all changes here) perfect scrolling in the page has been extended to pages viewed in IE7+ (assuming a compliant doctype). See the footer ad on this page as an example.

The Transparent Player Version 3.0 - live

After spending months in beta, the player version 3.0 is released and available for download to new and existing subscribers of Transparent Flash Player . The power of this product now for the display of multiple videos embedded in different ways in your pages is unprecedented. It is a completely new product from the early versions, re-written from the ground up and worth every cent.

New ADP plugin coming - footer ads!

Due to huge demand and the complexity of designing the HTML and CSS yourself, we outsourced this design to a Professional website design service and created a series of beautiful footer ads with an optional optin form inside. Transparent png images can be used such as the one on this page. There are a range of pre-supplied images or you can use your own (does not have to be png format), also a range of background images are available to choose from. Available in a few days - the newsletter will announce its release.

WordPress Popup System Update

The "WordPress Popup System" has been upgraded to version 1.02 - a minor upgrade which fixed some small bugs and added onclick capability in the standalone mode.

The plugin will be coming up soon for a major round of development in which the standalone mode will include many much requested features such as the lightbox and exit effects.

Advanced DHTML Popup Pro news update

Version 2.49 of ADP Pro has been quite exciting - although on the surface it appears that only a few things have changed, the reality is that the extensive core changes have made a lot of difference to users, especially those using it for multiple layers on a page, or dynamically changing a single layer.

The new API extensions (adpPlace(), adpTitle(), adpScroll()) and the dynamic updating of the positions of multiple layers with browser resizing have helped a lot of projects so far.

We wanted to comment on how the application will be even further extended in upcoming revisions, the work for which is about to start. The key focus of 2.50 will be new forms for the automation of the process of creating multiple layers and the content for them. Many people use this feature but find the current editing required rather tedious.

Also, the code for anchoring a layer to an HTML element (currently available as a demo on request) will be automatically generated as an option. Templates will be updated and extended to and these will be available for download on the site. Many more things are planned, to be announced soon.

One of the most important areas - documentation - will also be the focus of new effort, with updated, downloadable demos (many of which are already done for users but not publicly downloadable), "rough & ready" video tutorials and more.

May 2009

May 31, 2009

A solid development period for the The Transparent Flash Player Version 3.0. All the enhancements from the core extensions to ADP are now being implemented into the player script. The player itself is also being enhanced with several new flashvars. An updated feature list will follow in the next months.

April 2009

April 30th, 2009

The latest in the series of updates to Advanced DHTML Popup Pro is ready - Version 2.49. We had to divert to this in order to complete the The Transparent Flash Player Version 3.0, which required some enhancements to the core libraries. This has resulted in some major improvements to ADP as described below.

In this months issue we cover:

Advanced DHTML Popup Pro Version 2.49

This is being released initially to the newsletter subscriber list, to be followed in a few days on the site. It is the third of the recent series of revisions and much of the development is focused on the core script. Major changes are:-

Advanced DHTML Popup
New CSS code gives flawless scrolling of single & multiple layers in Firefox/Safari/Opera etc (used to be jerky in non-IE browsers)
Advanced DHTML Popup
Follow page scrolling extended to multiple layers
Advanced DHTML Popup
Browser resize handling extended to multiple layers in absolute positioning (top-right etc)
Advanced DHTML Popup
API & CSS extended to include individual title control of multiple layers
Advanced DHTML Popup
API extended to include dynamic control of absolute positions
Advanced DHTML Popup
New compile option to automatically stop audio stream when video layer closed

March 2009

March 5th, 2009

Two main threads of development are close to completion - a new product "ADV Direct" and Version 3.0 of The Transparent Flash Player.

In this months issue we cover:

Advanced DHTML Video Direct

Announcing the imminent release of a new product ADV-Direct, a purely script & template driven plug & play product for immediate deployment of dhtml based content in your pages.

With one line of script placed in the header the user can then add content via single line calls to the script which contain all common parameters for each of the templates. Advanced configuration can be modified via a simple config file.

Currently templates exist for YouTube, The Transparent Player & Generic (user controlled) content. Methods available are scrolling, modal (lightbox) effect, on-exit, 9 different locations in the page & more. Multiple layers with different kinds of content can simultaneously co-exist.

This product, begun originally as something for the Macintosh users but available to anyone as a lightweight yet powerful addition to ADP, will revolutionize the way in which users can add content to web pages. It will be the focus of a strong development drive over the next few months.

The Transparent Flash Player Version 3.0

The latest version of the The Transparent Flash Player will be available shortly. Integrated with the modal and exit methods, it is now far easier to use the powerful script that controls the movements of the player in the page and its triggering of other videos.

February 2009

February 5th, 2009

The second of a series of powerful upgrades to Advanced DHTML Popup Pro has been released. Version 2.48 completes the plugin implementation. Last month we announced the modal script (lightbox effect) is now a real plugin, fully automated. This month the overlay images pack and the video script are both integrated. But the real bonus is the video plugin, more on that below. More scripted templates, slide-up & slide-out methods and more.

In this months issue we cover:

The video plugin

What was previously a script that had to be manually edited is now a new form in ADP - see the details here. This is the first of a series of forms to come, each dealing with a different player, including the hugely popular, powerful & lightweight Transparent Player.

The plugin comes with a demo video, and is accessed by a new template under the "videos" folder under templates. On opening this, all attributes can be modifed via the form. The just save & compile as normal.

For those wanting to make their own transparent Flash® Video we recommend only one source of information that we know is complete, and completely trustworthy, from Josh Anderson at totalwebvideo.com

The images plugin

Now this set of beautiful images is added properly to the templates folder under "overlays", and each template corresponding to the images compiled as any other project.

Slide-up & Slide-out

In demand for some time we have added a new entry method slide-up from the bottom edge (people always wanted full-width small height popups that discreetly slide-up from the bottom), and a new exit method slide-out to the right. Depending on requests the other obvious combinations may be implemented also. Examples for this will be added to the examples page by tomorrow.

Adding your own templates

The backend of the templates has been re-engineered so that users may add their own templates. This was always possible if the template was just a simple basic content popup, but now, using the right naming conventions, images (such as overlays or background images) will be copied automatically when saving, iframe'd content also. Instructions on how to do this will be available shortly. JavaScripts will be copied also in the next revision (for now they can be a part of iframe'd content)

New templates

The existing templates have been revised and extended as the first stage of a multi-stage extension. New templates have been added for Aweber & GetResponse Optin forms, a "sign-up then don't show again" template so that an optin is shown only until it is filled out. A "mouse-out of content and disappear" template, and a couple of sample overlay templates have also been added.

Joomla compatible

Due to a considerable number of requests for information on how to use ADP within a Joomla! site we set one up and put some demos with instructions here. You will also see examples of the hugely popular, powerful & lightweight Transparent Player.

Using CSS that is not in-line

All the ADP templates use in-line CSS for styling the content, but it is also possible to use both an external file or a CSS style block, such as you would normally declare in the head section of your page. To do this though requires (thanks to IE's handling of the dhtml content layer) a trick.

Either place the style block or link to external sheet after the html of the content, or use a special (and by itself redundant) line at the top <input type="hidden"/>. The example shows both a style block and a link at the top of the content:

January 2009

January 12th, 2009

As promised the first of a series of powerful upgrades to Advanced DHTML Popup Pro has been released. Version 2.47 has the Exit-popup functionality that is in such great demand these days. In additional the modal script (lightbox effect) is now a real plugin, fully automated and installed in a couple of simple steps.

In this months issue we cover:

Exit Popup Functionality

In such demand for a while now, this functionality has been full developed for use with ADP Pro 2.47. It can be selected like any other method and used in combination with most of the other methods, as normal. All positioning options may be chosen from and best of all, it can now be combined with the modal plugin to produce "Modal Exit (lightbox effect) Popups".

See the examples page for special demos of these functions (by 13-Jan).

Modal Popup (Lightbox effect) script fully integrated as a plugin

What used to be a separate script is now a plugin, all that needs to be done is to copy the folder into the new "addins" folder under the root installation of ADP, restart ADP and the option to use it will be enabled.

The demo & instructions that has always been supplied with the package are still there, and linked to from the menu for the sake of users who need to understand the few API calls available, for more complex needs.

December 2008

December 30th, 2008

This is a turning point for us, we can finally turn the larger part of attention for a while to some development of the flagship product Advanced DHTML Popup, where you will see significant enhancements released over a series of revisions up to version 2.50. In addition and in parallel a server side version of ADP will be released shortly for beta testing. This will allow Macintosh users to finally use the product.

In this months issue we cover:

WordPress Popup System - special offer

We are looking to build a list of user links and testimonials to working examples on your blog(s) as part the launch of our new product. We will give away both the transparent flash embedding script and the modal script (both of which will be plugins for ADP Pro shortly instead of add-ins) in exchange. If you already have these, contact us to arrange something else. This offer ends on 7 January.

We are getting some great feedback from our WordPress Popup System and will be releasing version 1.10 soon, which will include greater method selection in the Lite version as well as modal and exit popups in both the Pro and Lite versions.

Remember - all upgrades are free, but the price will not stay so low for long, so get it now while its cheap!

Advanced DHTML Popup Development phase

Starting with the imminent release of 2.47 we will be working hard to push Advanced DHTML Popup Pro to a new level altogether at version 2.50. A whole series of additions is planned, including a range of powerful new scripted templates & better engineering of the templates backend to allow easy installation of new ones provided by us, or created by users.

Advanced DHTML Popup
A range of powerful new scripted templates

This will be a very powerful extension to the application because it will allow for rapid growth of the number of available templates, in many cases these are prompted by users who have particular needs and great ideas to solve them.

In one recent case we developed a template we called "On sign-up don't show again" which is a combination of the "don't show again" template and an optin form. The submission button does the same job as ticked the checkbox, so that having opted-in the visitor never sees the optin popup again.

In our files we have about 25 such ideas all just waiting to be developed and added into the application, either bundled with it or as a separate package. Why not give us your ideas for new templates - if they can be developed, we will develop them!

Advanced DHTML Popup
Simplification of the whole process of creating multiple popups

The creation of multiple content sets for multiple popups per page is, at the moment, somewhat clumsy. This will be re-engineered to simplify the whole process. New forms will be added for this functionality, and the contents will be automatically added to the compiled output.

Advanced DHTML Popup
DHTML Exit Popups

By popular request, the exit popup will be included as an option as early as 2.47. This is already developed and it remains simply to extend the application interface to include it.

Advanced DHTML Popup
Integration of current add-ons as plugins

The transparent (or otherwise) flash embedding script and the modal script will be plugins activated from the application, like any other plugin. All output required for them will be automatically generated. This is already in 2.46, an interim non-public version.

Advanced DHTML Popup
Expansion of API functions and power

Re-engineering of the core library will allow far greater precision control of the popup design in real time for those who need that, and the existing 3 main API functions for controlling the size, location and content of the popup(s) will be extended.

Advanced DHTML Popup
And much more...

This is a brief summary of the enhancements coming to Advanced DHTML Popup, lookout for the new releases and the what's new list for more details coming over the next few weeks.

Server-side ADP

There is a considerable need, even for Windows users, for a server-side version of ADP. Thanks in part to the great effort already made with the WordPress Popup System (WPS) front end, we can now start to realize this long awaited goal.

The WPS in its standalone mode already has many of the features of ADP Pro built into its web interface, and we will start from this to create a beta version for testing.

When this is available it will be announced here, and we already know of several people who would like to use it and provide valuable feedback in exchange, as usual, for free entry and free updates for life.

October 2008

October 10th, 2008

We have so many new projects and developments under way these days that this first edition of our newsletter has been held up for quite some time. Now we have reached a point of development of several projects where we really want to tell you about them.

In this months issue we cover:

WordPress Plugin Beta Release - free for testers!

It's been a long haul this one, but the result is something we are exceptionally happy with so far. True, its still in beta but after a series of revisions prompted by our limited number of wonderful beta testers we have reached version 0.95 and believe it to be the first stable version.

We need your help to take it to the next level, and you will get it and all upgrades for free. If you would like to participate please contact us with the name of one or more of your WordPress blogs where you will be using it.

See here for more details on the beta program.

See our blog for live examples, including a transparent spokesperson video.

This plugin for WordPress can be used in 2 modes, with Advanced DHTML Popup Pro and in a standalone mode.

The standalone mode, as the name implies, is completely self-contained and uses an interface via the options panel to set the characteristics of each popup in each chosen WordPress Post or Page.

For either mode any number of DHTML Popups on your blog (limited at the moment to one per page when using the Lite version) can be set up, with options for per-post/home page/all pages.

Flash video player version 2.0 news

Our transparent (or otherwise) flash video player is now available for sale. This player has many remarkable features, allowing extensive interaction with the dhtml layer that contains it.

You can see the full demo here: Transparent flash video player

Some of these features include:

  • Streams high quality flash video instantly
  • Control every aspect of its behavior
  • Can be stationary or scrolling with included dhtml in floating positions
  • Can be statically embedded with html as a traditional flash video player
  • Is one of the most light-weight players on the market
  • Can trigger unblockable dhtml pop ups with opt-in forms etc.
  • Can trigger additional videos to play in any position on the page
  • Can "auto scroll" the visitor to a point in the page you want then to see
  • Can trigger a series or chain of videos and opt in forms
  • Can track whether the visitor has already viewed the video or not

Actually creating the alpha transparent flash videos such as this one is covered in detail by Josh Anderson's package.

Josh is the real expert in this, and all things web video creation related. He offers a very reasonably priced package here which is packed with information.

After a highly successful launch and a great deal of positive feedback we have begun development of version 2.0. Among other things the key new feature will be the support of h.264 high definition video. Examples of this will be available shortly.

Flash video "Projector" demo

Many you will already know of this fantastic product for demo'ing videos on a clients site. But this technology does more than that, it also embeds the transparent flash video into a DHTML layer and positions it at some user-set location in the page, where it will then stay regardless of resizing and scrolling.

The stand-alone technology (Lite version) presented here allows you, the Webmaster, to show prospective clients your video on their site, without ever leaving your server.

Try it out here - project a video onto your site!

The package provides templates for the forms used to run the application. One is shown in the link above, and the other is similar but produces an equivalent URL that can be emailed to prospective clients.

In this Lite version the technology is standalone, there is no requirement to purchase Advanced DHTML Pro in order to use it. The Pro version (coming) does require ADP Pro and enables the projection of any custom built popup with any chosen methods of appearance etc.

Modal video "cinema"

We have developed a great example of the modal ("lightbox") popup by embedding YouTube videos in a series of links. The dhtml layer fades in at the same time as the modal mask is created to achieve a visually powerful effect which is proving very popular.

You can see it here - modal video

Anyone having trouble implementing this feel free to contact us for guidance.

We will be showing the same lightbox effect for a series of images shortly, and will be developing an extension (possibly for ADP version 2.47) which will auto-resize the layer containing the image. This already happens in the "Projector" and the "Transparent Player" technology.

Upgraded images pack released

The ever popular images pack has been extended. These images allow you to cover the basic popup design completely with what we have called an "overlay image".

A truly beautiful set of custom made images by professional artists hired just for this work, which has just been greatly extended to include a total of 50 overlay images and 91 close button images.

Check it out here - overlay images extension

News from Advanced DHTML Popup pro v2.46/7

We have had many requests for enhancement, and as always our strategy is to implement as many of those that are practical as possible, and as soon as possible. Here is a list of what can be expected in version 2.46, due out in a matter of weeks, and version 2.47, which will follow on very quickly after.

Remember - as with all our products upgrades are free!

  • New menu item "add-ins", and the modal script integrated with this. This means that on purchase of the add-in it is now possible to register it with the application and the code for it will be automatically generated if the option "modal" is set.
  • Clicking on project files (extension .dpu) now opens the project into the application, no longer will you have to navigate to it.
  • The dynamic content option has been converted to a local variable (per project) rather than a global (all projects) option. This was causing a great deal of unnecessary confusion.
  • A browser for the templates is being developed that will allow much better organization and extension of them. Also, a preview of each template will be possible
  • Several new templates and enhancement up of existing ones. The behind-the-scenes fundamental changes in ADP pro over the last few versions have allowed for much easier addition of complex new templates which create their own special scriptlets automatically on compilation. A few of these are listed here:
    • Image format .png support (where IE versions do not support png). This will mean that real graded transparency images can be used without the fix for IE that is currently needed
    • Auto-resizing image scriptlet
    • iFrame template - one for normal content (internal or external) and another for transparent iFrames (used for video)
    • Overlay template
    • Image thumbnail template
  • An extension of the existing multiple popup functionality to facilitate the creation of multiple contents.
  • An option to re-populate the content with null on close automatically so that flash movies (or other) stop the audio (this does not happen in IE, the audio continues and the default exposed function called when the popup is closed must be used to update the content at the same time).
  • Some GUI appearance enhancements

PHP secure mailer script in development

Many times people have asked how do they actually send email or collect addresses (opt-ins) from the template form provided. The simple truth is that up until now we have not concerned ourselves with that side of things, just the dhtml and the html form as an example.

But clearly there is quite a demand for a PHP script that is easy to configure and install. We know ourselves the difficulty of finding a script which was good, fairly priced, easy to install, had good support and was secure. In fact we didn't find one that satisfied all that, and decided to develop our own instead.

Watch this space for news on its release!

A code snippet for friendly image loading

And finally! Our code snippet of the month - this section will be expanded in future releases, why not tell us what you'd like to see here? And don't forget our freebies section at Free code for webmasters where we will place all freebies, including the great DHTML Newsticker.

When developing this: DHTML Popup PHP/MySQL images database we wanted a way to indicate that the image was loading (being pulled from the database and downloading to the browser), a very common request.

We only wanted something simple, no graphics going round and round or anything like that, just "Loading..." with the dots cycling from 1-3 while waiting for the image.

In the code below we show just a very basic implementation, no dhtml layer, just an image in the page. In the head section are defined 2 functions. They need to be there so that they get sourced immediately and can be called on before the page has finished loading (necessary in this case since the image is a part of the page and not a dhtml layer).

The function dotsdiv() is called from the body straight away, and sets the innerHTML of the div in the body called mydiv. The innerHTML is just the text "Loading" plus either 0,1,2 or 3 dots. The function calls itself, changing the number each time, until the setTimeout() is cancelled.

This happens when the function doit() is called. If you look at the img tag at the end you will see that the funciton is called when the image has loaded onload='doit()'. The visibility of the div is set to hidden, and the timeout cancelled.

You can see it action here - demo
